BMW E31 840ci: the restoration

My father's E31 was a masterpiece of engineering, and its configuration existed only twice worldwide. This project is about how I bring that car back into my life.

Two cars in the whole world

This specific configuration of the 840ci was built exactly twice. I'm now in contact with the owner of the other one, and it's the very car I'll be able to take over in two years. My father's car, in someone else's hands, but with a date on which it comes to me.

Two years is a long time. Too long to just wait.

The interim project

My plan: I'm building up an E31 now. It doesn't have to match my father's exact specification, because what matters to me is the wrenching itself and the story that comes out of it. I'll document every step of the restoration, and social media channels for it are in the works. If you follow along, you won't see polished after-shots. You'll see the road there.

Everything I learn on this build comes with me when the real car is finally standing in front of me.

Support the project

Your donation is what makes this project possible. Every contribution goes directly into the E31 build.

Why I'm walking the Nijmegen Four Days Marches for the eighth time in 2026 for this car is explained on the page about the eighth march.
